The result of the election: the victory for democracy and defeat for separatist terrorism

11 May 2008

The long march of democracy in Eastern province started with the liberation of Mavillaru sluice gate from LTTE and restoring the supply of water for the innocent farmers in the area. It was a time when LTTE artillery were even targeting Tricomalee town and strategic Navy camp as a result of shameful CFA signed by UNP leader Ranil Wickramasingha and Prabakaran. The monks of JHU timely influenced the government to take speedy action at a time when new UPFA government seemed to be trapped with the CFA signed by previous UNP leadership. The success of Mavillaru operation not only prevented another attempt of LTTE to chase away Sinhala and Muslim farming community from Eastern province, but also mark the beginning or new democratic era in Eastern province.

Demilitarization
It was clear military and political leadership that resulted in those limited military operations to continue until whole Eastern province is liberated and LTTE terrorists are chased away. The breakaway Karuna fraction of LTTE played a substantial role in defeating LTTE in key urban areas including Vakarae in Batticaloa District. The Karuna fraction went into extend that they even operated suicide attacks against Wanni LTTE carders.

Development
The government correctly identified that peace without progress can sink people’s hopes fast. The province was in urgent need of improving the infrastructure facilities and supportive services, which are prerequisites for accelerated development. Recognizing this imperative, the GOSL set up a comprehensive three year development plan as part of the Eastern Revival, a programmed to improve the infrastructure facilities and uplift the living conditions of the people in the East. It is again evident that various ‘rights’ organizations backed by INGO’s are no longer interested in developing the Eastern province and it is GOSL and its ministries that are playing a key role in development activities of the East.

Democratization
By conducting the provincial council elections, the government has completed its endvour of liberating Eastern province. Democratization started with conducting elections for local government bodies in Batticaloa district. While JHU initiated the military offensive against LTTE in Eastern province, JVP played leading role in establishing logistical ground for separate Eastern province.

The liberation of Eastern province got the political flavor when UNP leader Ranil Wickramasingha stated that liberation of Thoppigala is mere capturing a forest. UNP’s attitude towards the military operation against LTTE was further evident when UNP media spokesman Laksman Kiriella, in their weekly media briefing, mentioned that “Any bull can wage a war”. It was clearly an insult to brave soldiers who have risk their own lives to preserve independence of motherland and liberation of people from LTTE fascist terrorists.

When the government called for the elections in the Eastern province, UNP was more interested in finding reasons to evade the election than genuine interest in contesting. UNP’s stand was pretty much in line with the stand of LTTE that strongly opposed in establishing separate provincial council for Eastern province. However, UNP could not find a genuine reason to stay away from the election and therefore UNP formed a coalition with Hakeem fraction of SLMC. Ironically, it is only Ranil Wicramasingha and Rauf Hakkem that has signed accords with LTTE leader Prabakaran and both of them are still in the same political trail even after LTTE is defeated and chased away from the Eastern province. When Tamil political parties like TMVP openly canvassed for separate Eastern identity, UNP is still advocating merger of North and Eastern provinces (basis of Ealam).

UNP’s main political theme in the election campaign was demilitarizing of Pilliyan fraction. Pilliyan group has been playing strategic role in defeating LTTE in the eastern province and defending the area from infiltration of LTTE carders from Wanni jungle. This has greatly eased burden from the government security forces in the East thereby allowing them to focus in operations in the Wanni jungle in the North. As usual, UNP became the voice of Wanni tigers and Ranil Wickramasingha played the role of political psyloc demanding full disarmament of anti LTTE Pilliyan fraction in their transition period when government is still engaged in full scaled war against LTTE terrorists. Although LTTE’s proxy party TNA indirectly campaigned for UNP, the result clearly shows that LTTE’s political stand is no longer imperative among Tamils in the Eastern province.

The challenge of new East
The people of Eastern province have sealed the military victory against separatist terrorism by winning the UPFA in the election. The UPFA list consisted right mix of candidates from Tamil, Sinhala and Muslim communities and the people of the Eastern province has exhibited that they have high hope in democracy. Now it is the responsibility for the elected representatives in the Eastern provincial council to take up most of the political responsibilities in developing their home land and live in peace and harmony.

Since you condemn terrorism, I am interested in knowing how you justify the government working with the TMVP, a terrorist group that is more indisciplined than the LTTE, that is terrorizing the civilians in the East to arguably even a greater extent than the LTTE did, and that has been running a campaign of violence and ballot stuffing in the run up to this election.

Have you been to the East? When? Do you actually know what is going on there? Or, do you just believe what the government tells you?

This is in replying to Ravana, who does not know what Terrorism is and who seems to be clueless of what had happend last 20 years in East. The writer was not aware TMVP was a group that rejected the LTTE terrorism and came into political path. Although had to tgake arms due to the threats from LTTE, it is government's responsibulity to give them the fullest support to come into democracy.Further, he should know that TMVP is not a banned terrorist organisation like LTTE.
LTTE the so called "diciplined terrorist group" responcible for so many thousand of civilian killings in Sri Lanka. At least I advice the writer to read last three months papers and see how many innocent civilians killed by blowing up passanger busses, and suicide bombers. Election violoance is not a new thing to Sri Lanka, in that sence UNP, UPFA, JVP and all are terrorists.
Except LTTE. Because under LTTE there will be NO Elections.
Rather than advicing others to go to East, advice the 'Ravana' to go to East.

LTTE is not banned in Sri Lanka you idiot. Keep giving dogs like TVMP a life and it continues to show Mahindha is a fraud. By the way you need to use gold coins to buy food next time as SL rupee is becoming worthlss.

Before blaming others as idiots etc, you must be totaly oblivious of the world markets and the escalation of prices, granted that this governments spendings etc are questionable, But they have done the right thing in getting former terrorist on the democratic path and continue on efforts of the military in the north.

Just for a moment imagine if by some chance the TMVP joins hands with the LTTE again its going to utter chaos.

Whether Pillayan and his clan will deliver the goods is remained to seen but its worth a chance and the gamble MR is taking only history will tell...

So without knowing much facts and just by reading anti bias english dailies dont run into conclusion. Every governments before this had its faults.

Lets wait and see what the future holds

To Rawana and other anoymous.
Needless to explain again, one person clearly said before blaming others, you have to know what happened and what could happen.

After long time, then estern people had a opportunity to vote and elect their members decomcratically despite some elections riggings and frauds which are common not only in Sri Lanka, but also in the region. But yet full credit must go to government to have at least election for vote. The UNP initially said that GOSL liberated a desert and then a jungle, bt now they all camped there to win the PC's and won the Trinco with a clear majority. So what can now UNP people say ? This is not a fair and free election. Can you tell when Sri Lanka had so called free and fair election ? After being defeated, every parties accuse of unfair and biased elections.

So as my friend told, don't beleive only biased English news articles, pl come out from your a/c rooms and step into real world to see what's happening. The food prices , oil prices are not only in Sri Lanka, it's global issue if you know the global behaviour. There are so many nwanted expenditure and corruptio to be eliminated, that's true and to be addressed collectively.

But pl remove out your coloured sunglasses and be a paryless, religionless and raceless person and feel the difference of cleared and uncleared araes. It's matter of time when the north is cleared. Then you and me will also be in the same vilage. Be wise, be natural and be precedent my friends.

The LTTE is a not banned organization in Sri Lanka. WHY ? That is only for them to come in to negotiation table. Nothing else, elsewhere LTTE is banned up front. So don't be mislead why LTTE is not banned in SL, They have been allowed to come to negotitation table for which they never come until they are crushed militarily.

Remember my friend, Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim , Burger or any race irrespectiv of their reliogon, must be MILITARILY destroyed if they takes arms against democratically elected government. This happened in 1971 and 1989 and will happen in future too.

Terorism can be today here in Jaffana and tomorrow therein Galle, both must be given no chance but to crush militarily without considering their race and religon.

Hi All,
EPDP and TELO came to democratic path decades ago. Still they have to carry weapons. As long as LTTE is not fully defeated, other Tamil political parties have to carry weapons for their self defense. This is the ground reality. But political idiots like Ranil Wickramasingha can not understand or he do not want to disclose this reality because he fear LTTE most and lick Prabakaran's boot. Look at what happend to Ananda Sangaree... Because he advocate non violance he can not do politics in North. This is exactly what UNP want Pilliyan to be done !!!! Only EPDP and TELO survived because they still carry some portion of arms for self defence.... Ranil Wicramasingha is desperate (act as a Syloc, which is correctly mentioned in the post) to disarm Pilliyan and let the chicks to be hunted by the fox !!! People do politics with ground realities.

Did people really vote? Low turnout plus TMVP/GOSL rigging won the day.

What are the biased papers? All the papers other than the government owned papers have reported heavy widespread rigging.

Dear idiots and gents,

All should remember that there is no chance for terrorism in this developed world. Whatever the story in rigging, all the communities wanted to have elections. That is the reason why UNP won Trinco and Govt. won the other two. Who won the election is a different story. The massage is people like the ballots than the bulets. LTTE or JVP cannot continue their violent path. Human lives and properties are not owned by JVP or LTTE. Before these two blood thirsty groups, Sri lanka was very peaceful.

recent elections are imo a farce because:
-65% ONLY turned out ot vote
-the third "party" is the rejected votes party (8.47% !!!), that basically lowers the turn up figure to around 60%..., unless you include these rejected votes inot some form of protest (?)
-UNITED PEOPLE’S FREEDOM ALLIANCE got 52%, i.e. half of the 60% who voted, i.e 3 out of ten ppl voted for them. since when is 3 out of 10 enough to claim a sweeping victory , a mandate to continue these reckless politics etc etc?!?!? what a joke! to me it means 7 out of 10, are against you and your politics.

-rigging and stuffng, intimidation widespread

am i wrong? pls correct me if i am msitaken!
