Village for Mahinda, Town for Sarath – The inside story

29 Jan 2010

It is UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe who initiated petty regional division to politics by calling UPFA policies (Mahinda Chinthanaya) as “Madamulana Chinthanaya”. The government correctly responded to Ranil by calling UNP’s politics as “Kollupitiya Chinthanaya”.

By calling “Madamulana Chinthanaya”, Ranil Wickramasingha may have intended “Gode Chinthanaya” as most of the elite lumpant comprador society in Colombo look at the villagers of this country. This elite society has now completely lost the grip of political power in Sri Lanka. However, they are still fighting hard to regain their lost political supremacy.

Ranil – The traditional comprador lumpant leader
Ranil Wickramasinghe is a typical lumpant leader who does not have any real character or leadership qualities. Ranil had a rosy way to the helm of UNP leadership by his ancestral heritage. He is no longer a marketable character in new independent Sri Lanka where comprador society has proven failed in developing our mother country by following their colonial master’s agenda.

Sarath – The political virgin with capitalist flavor
Sarath Fonseka was the West’s choice of alternative candidate. Fonseka is mere general who knew only military rule (as himself previously stated) and had no political ideology or vision. However he held all important negative qualities like extreme passion, aggression, competitiveness and immorality that capitalism demands.

They believed that they could market new found 59 years old political virgin using their INGO lead media-marketing mechanism. The result of the presidential election mirrors the effectiveness of their vigorous campaign.

The result - Village for Mahinda and Town for Fonseka
The election results clearly shows that Mahinda has secured resounding victory in rural areas while Fonseka has shown some success in Colombo city areas and a few other urban electorates like Gall town, Kandy town, Negambo etc.. In the contrary, Mahinda got the highest winning percentage from Monaragala (69%), Hambanthota (67%) and Anuradapura (66%) districts respectively. Though Mahinda was defeated in highly urban electorates, he secured resounding victory in Colombo suburbs like Maharagama, Kaduwela, Kasbawa etc.

Colombo – A heritage of colonization

Colombo city is just another result of being a colony of western countries. Colombo city was artificially built to fulfill requirements of those colonial masters. The elite westernized lumpant society and urban under privileged (Mudukku) societies are the direct heritage of colonization of Colombo. Both of these social segments had lost their roots from our native culture and heritage.

The elite comprador society

The UNP was the brain child of colonial masters who officially left in 1948. Ever since, the lumpant comprador society holds the political power for good part of post colonial era. This comprador lumpant society is (in the neighborhood of western diplomatic agents) mainly concentrated in Colombo metropolitan area that UNP won. The UNP’s wining in Colombo Central, Colombo East and Colombo West was highly influenced by this society that is keeping one leg in Sri Lanka and the other in the Western world.

Under privileged (Mudukku) society
The urban mudukku society has been a tragic result of long colonial rule. The capitalist system established under UNP regime further cemented it. Unfortunately, the under privileged people in this social segment seems to have accepted this as their fate and they hardly shown any guts to come out of their calamity. The ‘mudukku’ society seems to be thinking that since they are a result of colonialism, they must continue to be ruled by post colonial lumpant agents. On the other hand, their likings and cultural aspirations are pretty much similar to that of privileged lumpant society. While the lumpant society go to five star hotels to drinks, gamble and sex, handful of under privileged people in mudukku society satisfy with illicit liquor (kasippu), betting or street prostitutes.

Interestingly, while electorates like North Colombo has majority of this under privileged lumpant class, the electorates like Central Colombo, Eastern Colombo and Borella have mixture of both. Both of these post colonial social segments have collectively contributed to the winning of UNP allied candidate in those areas.

Gama Naguma – The Mahinda’s economic model
Mahinda is not a capitalist comprador leader. He believes in national economy. Therefore, Mahanda Chinthanaya emphasise on building villages (Gama Naguma) as oppose to traditional view of urbanizing the society. Town is a place of passion, corruption and competition. It’s a place of displeasure, stress and envy. Village is where our cultural values are preserved. It’s a place of serenity, self-satisfaction and cooperation. The vision of Mahinda Chinthanaya matches the village more than the town and more than 75 % of the Sri Lankan population live in villages. Therefore, policies must be targeted towards developing the villages and the people of the villages still hold our traditional qualities like appreciation and gratitude unlike the urban people who are demanded to adapt negative qualities like selfishness and passion by the vicious capitalist system. The election results mirrors this simple truth.

p.s
This post by no means try to brand every one in discussed social segment as of same category. Rather we analyzed the general attitude and culture of the majority of these social segments. There are exceptional cases in all those social segments. We do not believe that town is totally black and village is pure white, rather its a matter of blackish vs whitish.

It's not just the goday folk who supported Mahinda. Sirasa tried very hard to spin it that way.

I was born in Colombo to a middle class family, went to a good school, was educated in foreign universities and work as a professional. English is my primary language and I'm not a practising Buddhist.

I supported Mahinda not because he represented rural Sri Lanka, but because of my considered opinion that he is the better candidate of the two. I think it's mostly the mudukku karayas, kasippu karayas and watti ammas in the urban lumpen underclass who voted for Fonseka. The Colombo peacenik lot supported Fonseka because he was "anyone but Mahinda". They are not elite at all, but merely elitist, egoistic and cocooned from the reality.

The word "Kollupitiya Chinthanaya” I belive was first used by Dallus. Its very meaning full world because not only good part of comprador native capitalist enterprenuers, but both US and UK embassies located there. Further, major hotels and luxary apartments (Colombo placa, etc) which are mostly occupied by CEO's of major multinational companies (UniLiver, Maharaja, JKH, Nestley, CTC, etc) are also located in the vicinity of Kollupitiya. We all know Ranil's UNP is governed by these individuals from Kollupitiya !!
