JVP is unique political movement having its ups and downs since 1971 and it is the only party in the south that has paid its political price in thousands of lives of youth, in 1971 and 1988/89 respectively. While LTTE represented the misery of the misled youth of Tamils in the North, JVP has been playing the same role in the South.
Rohana Wijeweera
Rohana Wijeweera’s father was an active member of Communist Party of Sri Lanka (pro-Soviet wing) Later he was disabled after an attack of the opponent United National Party (UNP) thugs. Later Wijeweera got a scholarship for Lumumba University to study medicine. Wijeweera was later expelled from Russia due to his clandestine political activities. Wijeweera later joined politics in breakaway fraction of the Communist party of Sri Lanka.
Conspiracy politics at very inception
Wijeweera involved in several conspiracies against his party leadership at very tender age. Later he formed his own fraction and organized them in secret manner to form JVP in 1965. From very inception, JVP was not believed in democracy, the faith of the voters. They were more believed in revolution, a means of terror and blood shed.
The 1971 insurgence
In 1971, JVP leaders believed that they can oust the government and full fill socialist revolution with couple of hundreds of guns (‘Galkatas’) and grenades. That political joke ended up in a tragedy where hundreds of so called revolutionist lost their lives in mock attacks to police stations. Wijeweera and some of its leaders that involved in the armed riot were jailed after a tribunal.
JR releases key JVP suspects
Junius Richard Jayewardene stormed into helm of Sri Lankan politics in 1977 and one of his political decisions was to release all former military rebels of JVP. Soon after Wijeweera was released he started his politico-military activities. He contested for the presidential election in 1982 with high hopes, but only managed to get 275,000 votes from entire country.
In the aftermath of state terrorism unleashed on Tamils in 1983 (the black July), the old Yankee political fox JR included JVP to the banned political parties together with NSSP and CP. This was like poke into eyes of a man who was about to cry. While other banned political parties later joined with main stream democratic politics, JVP reverted back to their mode of clandestine politics. UNP’s fascist capitalist policies formed a breeding ground for Wijeweera to grab innocent youth for his politico-military activities
The 1988/89 terror period
In 88/89 period, JVP repeated the same mistake of turn to violence. By this time JVP had completely lost political flavor where they act more like terrorists than revolutionists. During the terror period JVP hardly confront with armed forces or police, rather they mostly murdered journalists, religious leaders, educationists and intellectuals.
When LTTE terrorism is at its peak in the North, JVP was busy attacking government properties and declaring unofficial curfews to destabilize the government in the South. At that time the enemy of JVP was India and not LTTE. The second round of political clown ship of JVP ended up in loosing thousands of youth and innocent civilians in the South. Almost all the political council members of JVP were murdered by then UNP administration.
Current conducts of some of the key accused of 1971 riot
Most of the key characters in 1971 riot played key roles in Sri Lankan politics till recently. However true opportunistic characters of most of these former Maxists are now plainly exposed to the public and they all have fallen into the dustbin of history. They have one thing in common they either directly support extreme capitalist parties or indirectly support neo-colonialism by being part of INGO community to grab Dollar, Pounds and Krone of the West.
Sunanda Deshapriya:
Sunanda Deshapriya alias Podi Athula (5th suspect) was one of the notorious of them who supported LTTE through his INGO activities. He played key role in parading CBK into Sri Lankan politics using his so called ‘Vikalpa’ media network funded by INGOs. During the very peck time of fight against terrorism this traitor witnessed before a UN human right commission in favor of LTTE terrorists. He was later ousted from his INGO’s alleged of financial mishandling.
Victor Ivon:
Vctor Ivon (7th suspect) was another key suspect of 71 riots who later joined INGO politics through his so called ‘Vikalpa’ news paper ‘Ravaya’. He too supported CBK and later Ranil Wickramasingha. He is now trying to hang onto Rajapaksa for mere survival.
Lional Bopage:
Lional Bopage was another key suspect of 71 riots who is still playing secret role in INGO politics in Sri Lanka live in exile. His current political ideology promotes LTTE separatism and recently visited Sri Lanka to support Sarath Fonseka’s political campaign.
Jayadeva (James) Uyangoda:
Uyangoda was another key suspect who turned into anti national politics. During CBK regime, he held key posts in Centre for Policy Research and Analysis and Sri Lanka Foundation promoting LTTE’s separatist ideology in the South.
