1 Dec 2009

A general comment by Sarath Fonseka:
It would be difficult to answer your question even to a politician with more than thirty years of experience. But I am confidence that politicians around me will advice me on those.

Who invited you to come to politics first?
It is JVP that officially invited me first. But I think they have all get together and discussed before talking to me.

On fund raising for his election campaign:
If the LTTE are helping, it is not because of the war, it is because of the programs we have envisaged. If the LTTE are helping therefore, they are welcome. Even LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran's parents are welcome to back me.

Why this war could not be won earlier? Was it because of failed politicians or failed military leadership?
Indeed there were enormous amount of mistakes in military side……President Rajapaksa's predecessors, too, had tried to defeat terrorism though they never succeeded due to the failure on both the part of the armed forces and political leadership.

On international mediation on fight against terrorism:

I can not say their mediation is wrong. But on 16th we were on point of no return in war.

What is your economic model?
I endorse UNP’s economic philosophy. Private sector has alleged that it is difficult do their business. I will ensure that they can develop their business and they have the freedom.

What is your solution to ethnic problem?
Solution might have to go even beyond the 13th Amendment to the Constitution to suit the present situation.

What would you do to restore democracy?
According to my current understanding, I have decided to abolish executive presidency.

On appointment on Chief of defence staff (CDS):

CDS was very high profile glamouras prestigious appointment…. But without any powers. That does not mean I am power hungry….

On war crimes:
Even I was part of Rajapaksa regime during the war. But I can assure that there are no war crimes in the part of Army.

What is your stand on “Mathata Thitha” (restriction on liquor) ?
It was both good and bad and in a lighter vein added it served some purpose at social gatherings and helped the brain function better. I do not want to lose votes by undertaking to ban liquor.
