It is his direct command and own military strategy that won over terrorism. He even went to an extent claiming that Army played key role in destroying LTTE’s armed vessels thousands of nautical miles away from the island. It was that time evident that he has a BIG ego that even himself can not control.
The politically bankrupt UNP and JVP together with the help of Western forces hurriedly took the weakness of Sarath Fonseka’s character to their advantage. JVP firstly claimed that they will nominate a common candidate and support him. Then UNP found it difficult to support a candidate whom first nominated by JVP. Then the ‘common candidate’ was re-Christianized as a ‘neutral candidate’ (Nirpakshika Apekshka) so that UNP can endorse him fooling their supporters.
However the neutral candidate Sarath Fonseka was later seen attending UNP’s general summit wearing batch of UNP with elephant symbol. JVP brothers neither dare to question the neutral candidacy of Sarath Fonseka nor ‘bell’ the retired general. In the game of survival the policies or ideologies no longer matter to either JVP or UNP.
It was clear that weak character of Sarath Fonseka was exploited by officials of the USA state department when he visited USA to renew his Green Card citizenship. He provided sufficient hints to the Western World on their allegations on war crimes. However the tradeoff was established and he was allowed to return to country to promote West’s political agenda as a pseudo hero who did not disclosed any thing to them. However, the damage was already done to the country by indirectly affirming the false allegations.
The second round of the hilarious drama surfaced when he leaked his resignation letter to pro JVP website. The funny thing was that the leaked letter itself claimed to be confidential. Adding to the injury, it was later revealed by pro UNP newspaper ‘The Sunday Times’ that Sarath Fonseka had submitted a modified version of the resignation letter that his political associates had previously prepared. The ‘Resignation Letter’ saga thus ended with Fonseka loosing credibility not only in common people, but within his own political associates as well.
Sarath Fonseka kicked off his race for presidency claiming to be the sole hero of the War. However, on 13 th December the false patriotic boom was suddenly burst when he stated pro UNP weekend news paper that Gotabaya Rajapaksa directly ordered Brigadier (now Major General) Shamindra Silva to kill Pirpaharan and his associates even if they come forward for surrender. Until that day Fonseka claimed himself to be the ‘man’ behind all the operations. Now it was suddenly disclosed by himself that it was Gotabaya that directly commanding the operational military leaders even at stretigic hours of the fight!
The ulterior motive of Fonseka was to betray defense sectary Gotabaya Rajapaksa so that the western vicious agenda can be further strengthen, However it soon became a nightmare for Fonseka when the common people of the country started questioning his great betrayal of politico-military leadership that brought this country glory and dignity.
When the pressure is mounting on his campaign he called another press conference and denied the press report saying ‘The Sunday Leader’ has misquoted him. He further claimed full responsibility of all the conducts of military forces to regain confidence of the people.
Adding to the injury the editor of The Sunday Leader, Fedrica Janz confirmed the media that Sarath Fonseka himself phoned her and revealed the published news item and therefore she is neither planning publish a correction nor apologies him.
Now Sarath Fonska is in miserable state where he has lost confidence and credibility time and again even before submit the nomination. His only selling point was his self claimed sole ownership of the military win. Now he has not only tarnished his sole ownership of the victory but become the traitor or the same.
