Will General Sarth Fonseka play into the hands of UNP or vise versa?

1 Nov 2009

The possible entering of General Sarath Fonseka in to Sri Lankan politics has surfaced interesting possibilities in Sri Lankan Political Arena. All these possibilities solely depend on one SINGLE factor. Will General Sarath Fonseka play into the hands of UNP or vise versa? Let’s start analyzing the current ground realities of UNP.

The pathetic state of UNP
If one closely analyse the PC election results held during last two years, it is crystal clear that UNP vote bank is on the decline and UNP vote percentage currently hobble around petty mid twenties (20-30%). It’s only a miracle that can bring this low percentage of votes to magical over 50% mark in the next presidential election.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, the winning leader
Unlike the inefficiencies and corruption charges against the ministers, Mahinda Rajapaksa himself is still at the peak of the popularity. He is a true born leader tempered through the current political system. Unlike some others who are made out of the foreign Anglican mold, Mahinda Rajapaksa has deep rooted social and cultural values of our own ground.

He provided strong political leadership in the fight against terrorism. Any unbiased person will agree that there was hardly any political mistake in that endeavor. People of this country still have traditional value systems in tact and they will certainly pay their gratitude to the president in the next election. Therefore the next presidential election against current UNP leadership is just a piece of cake for the president.

Ranil Wickramasingha the abolished coin
Ranil Wickramasingha has time and again proved that he is mere character without any leadership qualities. He just happened to enter politics because he attended Royal College and also happened to be the nephew of Junius Richerd Jayawardana. He did his best to grab the presidency by the help of his media ancestral heritage, comprodor business community and Western masters. All his attempts were miserably failed and now he has proved to his own masters that he is no longer capable of even contesting against Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Dearth of secondary level leadership in UNP
LTTE terrorists successfully prune down the leaders of UNP. The LTTE killer list span from R Premadasa, Lalith Atulatmudali, Gamini Dissanayaka, Ranjan Wijayaratna and many more. This effectively created infertile secondary level leadership in the UNP. There was not any UNP leader in the party in recent past who even dared to call LTTE by the word ‘TERRORISTS’. They not only did not dare to fight against terrorism, but also spoke out against those who were truly committed to the fight ageist terrorism.

Ranil Wicramasingha himself under mined the forward march of our brave soldiers by commenting on ‘Toppigala Victory’ and many other occasions. UNP MPs Ravi Karunanayaka and Laksman Kirielle were in the fore front to criticize and make mock of valiant scarifies of security forces. Now UNP have no one in their ranks to put forward to compete against Mahinda Rajapaksa. People have completely lost confidence in entire UNP secondary level leadership.

Emerge of General Sarath Fonseka
It is this backdrop that UNP was looking for ‘SOME ONE’ to put forward for the next general election. This is not because they have any hope that their alternative (‘SOME ONE’) candidate will win the presidential election, but hoping that Ranil Wickramasingha can survive in politics for another term. They thought that a ‘Billy Boy’ will take up the challenge for his personal pride of being a presidential candidate and leave politics after the election returning the baton back to Ranil Wickramasingha.

They were just look out for ‘SOME ONE’ and various names were mentioned on the way. The master mind behind this was none other than Mangala Pinsiri Samaraweera. Ranil was happy to accept any ‘SOME ONE’, while Mangala being over confident looking for some one who might even win!

When the name of former chief justice Sarath N Silva was mentioned, all relevant parties were happy. However, the web sites affiliated to Mangala Samaraweera suddenly start to spread news saying General Sarath Fonseka will be the next presidential candidate for UNP.

Will General Sarth Fonseka play into the hands of UNP or vise versa?
The original plan of Ranil Wickramasinghe was to find SOME Billy Boy to be selected for the loosing presidential election so that he can continue in the helm of UNP. But will battle hardened General Sarath Fonseka play in to the hand of Ranil WIckramasingha?

General Sarath Fonseka is a great war hero and great character. But he has no political exposure. He has successfully command Sri Lanka army in to victory against LTTE terrorism. But his political personality does not match with Mahinda Rajapaksa who emerged from the common people and not from ranks.

On the other hand President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the commander-in-chief of the armed forces in fight against terrorism, while General Sarath Fonseka was under him commanding Army. By constitution, not only political leadership but also the overall military leadership was under President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Therefore, one can not set aside merits from President Rajapaksa for providing military leadership. On the other hand the pivoted role played by his brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa as the sectary to defense ministry is a plus point to Mahinda Rajapaksa.

It will only be a miracle if Sarath Fonseka out smart Mahinda Rajapaksa in the next presidential election. Even General Sarath Fonseka should know this ground reality. Then will he take up mere challenge of being a Billy Boy of Ranil Wickramasingha’s saviour?

Lessons from ex-General’s entry into UNP politics
The nation has already witnessed the assassination of Major General Lucky Algama another elite Anandian in a rally in Ja-Ella in 2000 presidential election campaign of Ranil Wickramasinghe. We must not forget how the UNP destroyed Major General Janaka Perera, who swallowed the UNP bait and entered into politics with Ranil Wickremasinghe. The UNP did not even bother to accuse his real killers, the LTTE.

Ranil and his coterie have no love for anyone, but for themselves. These are very dangerous people, the will do anything to gain power. Therefore, we sincerely hope that you will not make the same mistake by compromising your own security to rescue a political clown.

If General Sarath Fonseka has a long term political mission to develop this country and if he has proper authority beforehand, yes he should take that decision. However, people of this country will not be too hesitant to make him the winner this time because they still have enough faith in Rajapaksa regime.

P.S.
To General Sarath Fonseka,

Following are some excerpts from some of the UNPrs when you were hard fighting against LTTE terrorism. Please serve them in good stead as well if by any chance you win.

“Thoppigala is just a rock,, the military map is in English and it is named as Baran’s Hat… I wonder these people have read the military map” – Ranil Wickramasinghe

“Our commander of army is not even suited for salvation army” – Mangala Pinsiri Samaraweera

“Any bull can wage war” – Lakshman Kiriella

“Once these people go Pamankada saying Alimankada,,, Other time the go Madawacchiya saying Kilinocchiya” – Ravi Karunanayaka

Yours Loving
