In both 1971 and 1987/89 periods, JVP fiercely confronted with Sri Lankan Security forces and Police. On both the occasions Sri Lanka Army played key role in suppressing JVP insurgencies. It estimates that around 50,000 JVP carders and suspects were killed during 1987/89 JVP insurrection.
In 1988/89 period, JVP not only attacked Army and Police posts/camps, but also involved in killings of civilians and government servants in addition to the destruction of national assets. The prolonged atrocity between Sri Lankan military forces and JVP spread into an extent where family members of both Armed Forces and JVP insurrectionists were also brutally killed by during the terror period.
The Army played key role in militarily suppressing JVP insurgency where both parties were accused for using ruthless tactics during that time. The JVP’s entire top politico-military leadership including its founding leader Rohana Wijeweera were killed by Sri Lanka Army. It is only current JVP leader Somawansa Amarasingha who fled to Europe survived among the top JVP leaders.
General Sarath Fonseka was in active military service during 1987/89 terror period. It is ironic that JVP that has twice fought against Sri Lankan military forces are now proposing an Ex-General as their representative for the next presidential election.
This clearly shows the pathetic political reality that JVP is now facing in the wake of major elections. Their vote bank has completely eroded due to wrong political strategies adopted during last two years. They did not genuinely support the fight against LTTE terrorism during last two years. In fact they tried their best to overrun the Mahinda Rajapaksa government with the support of UNP during last two budgets. If any of their plots were successful, the fight against terrorism may have ended in complete disarray despite thousands of scarifies of valuable lives of Sri Lanka security forces.
JVP did not genuinely supported ‘fight against LTTE terrorists’ where General became a hero. Now JVP has suddenly wake up in their sleep and suddenly shouting to support the candidacy of General Sarath Fonseka.
JVP commemorate their fallen carders including their leader Rohana Wijeweera during “Ill Maha Viru Samaruma” on November. Probably, JVP may invite General Sarath Fonseka to their next “Ill Maha Viru Samaruma” too. If Rohan Wijeweera could have spoken, he would definitely ask Somawansa Amarasingha, “Comrade, are you nominating a fox to guard the chiks?”

Marxist nominating a General for presidency.... Hah Hah Haa......
So far JVP at least got the votes of the families who were killed killed in JVP up risings.... This time JVP is going to loose their permenent vote base as well for sure.....
Are the Marxist or opportunists?
I really feel for those ignorant youth that killed during 1971 and 1988/89.
Those who are supporting General may be shooting security forces in two years time,,, thats the nature of JVP !!!! THE BOGUS PATRIOTS!!!!!
JVP = OPERTUNISTS
If the present GOSL can appoint a former LTTE terrorist (Karuna) who was responsible for hundreds of killings of armed forces and civilians as their vice president of the SLFP, what right do they have to point any fingers at the JVP?
That's like the pot calling the kettle black, but then that's what politics are all about in Sri Lanka right?
Dear Anon @ 17 November 2009 14:29,
Mahinda is in commanding position while Karuna Amman is taken to the government. Here JVP is going to give leadership to the General to govern them....
That is big difference :-)

Terrorists/insurrectionists joining political leadership is common, but Terrorists/insurrectionists united with military leaders is very rare in world history. I wonder this is first time happening in world political history.
This may result in good or bad.... Uniting combatants together may results in uncertain results because we have not seen such cases much in the history.
