Cricket World Cup Win in 1996 – A vital lesson for winning over colonialism

7 Nov 2009

The Cricket world cup victory in 1996 was not a mere co-incident, but a logical result of change of attitude of all the players and the cricket administration. Until 1996, we were taught to believe that cricket is “Gentlemen’s game” and we must play according to the norms preach by White Colonial Masters.
The teams from colonized countries were suppressed and humiliated on the field by sledging and off the fields using the supremacy of media monopoly (BBC, ABC, Sky Sports) of colonial masters.

Cricket was invented by the White and they governed and controlled every aspect of it. Even the cricketing shots were categorized and people were taught to play only those cricketing shots (which are natural in their pitches and weather) documented in their books.

Until late 1990’s Sri Lanka was the under dogs and darlings of the White colonial countries. Sri Lanka team was chiefly getting defeated in matches but equally praised in Western media for being gentle on and off the field and following the rules of gentlemen’s game (which these so called white gentlemen’s never follows).

WHAT WAS THE REASON BEHIND THIS?

Just like colonial masters strategically transferred the political power in to the hands of local comprador (so called) leaders, playing cricket was mostly confined to their Anglo-Catholic colleges. The players from other schools find it very difficult to get a place in National Team. Until late 1990’s the majority of the national players were from Royal-Thomian and other Anglo-Catholic colleges. The cricket administration was also under their grip. The players coming from Anglo-Catholic system never dare to challenge their White Western master’s on or off the field. They were made to think that mere playing with White people is a privilege and should not bother even thinking of winning over them.

It all started to change in late 1990’s when Buddhist schools led by Ananda and Nalanda managed to out number the traditional Royal-Thomian supremacy in the national cricket team. In Parallel, people like Ana Punchihewa and Thilanga Sumathipala (An old Anandian and a Nalandian) came into the fore front in administrative side. The result was drastic change in the thinking of whole cricket team and the administration. For the first time a new mission of “Targeting to be the best Test cricket nation by 2000” was brought forward. New generation of the players no longer satisfied with mere playing with White nations but wanted to beat them.

The players like Jayasooriya, Kaluwitharana and Muralitheren were given free license to play with their natural potential rather than confined in to the strokes and bowls in traditional cricket books of the West.

It all came to the surface during Muralitheren saga in Australia in 1996. The Australian cricket administration and media assumed that Sri Lankan cricketers and administration will react in traditional tamed manner. But they found it wrong when Sri Lankan team led By Arjuna Ranatunga strongly reacted to defend their fellow bowler in all guns up. They knew that the new generation of cricket administration is firmly behind them. It was the Murrallitharan- Darel Hair saga that leads to the famous world cup victory in 1996.

Noticeably, four players (Arjuna, Mahanama, Gurusingha, and Darmasena) out of the winning team were from leading Buddhist schools Ananda and Nalanda while most of the other players from out side schools including Kandy and Mathara. Incidentally, the world champion team did not comprise of a single player from traditional cricket playing colleges of colonial era, the Royal-Thomian supremacy.

The 1996 world cup victory was great example of the importance of winning over local colonial debris as a pre requisite to win over colonialism.

About a decade later in 2009 the same was proved again in winning the ‘fight against terrorism’. I this historic win, more than 90% of the top politico-military leadership was comprised of these Buddhist-Schools.

Dear Liberal,

Is winning World cup in 1996 result of xenophobia? or is it result of overcoming xenophobia?

You nick name may be 'Liberal Lanka', but your intention of commenting is preserve 'colonized lanka'.

Great analysis LankaRising,, pls keep up the good work exposing hidden truths of SL politics and social issues.

Dear Gayan

Winning the world cup was not a result of xenophobia nor overcoming it. It is the result of abolishing the monopoly held by not only royal-thomas but also Ananda and Nalanda. Why does every social problem has to be racial for you people?

The hypocrisy of this blog always amazes me. For example the administrators behind the huge success of SL cricket were Ananda Punchihewa and late minister Gamini Dissanayake who was from Trinity College Kandy which is a christian school. That is why after winning the world cup Arjuna Ranathunga visited the home of Gamini Dissanayake. But because of the inherent hate this writer has with christianity he shamelessly forgets Gamini Dissanayake and tries to give credit to Sumathipala who did nothing to SL cricket other than squander millions.

And commenting on sites like this is not to preserve the 'colonized Sri Lanka' what ever that means, but to stop sri lanka been slip towards another Zimbabwe.(now this writer can write what a huge successful country zimbabwe had been under mugabe and how western controlled media is hiding the truth from the world. lol)

When peple llike Gamini Dissanayaka,,, etc were administrating,,, we play play and play cricket,,, but hardly win over Colonial masters,,,, But soon after administration changed to genuine local personalities,, we start winning,,,, Same is true for win against terrorism,,, We were fighting against terrorism ubder JR, Premadasa, Atulathmudali, CBK Ranil,,etc.... But never had a remote of winning,,,But all the sudden the Mahinda is elected,, the whole defence team is changed,, and we all started believe in winning,,, thats the difference of attitude of people from post colonial derbies background and genuine local sinhala Buddhist background... Unfortunately its a bitter fact for people like Liberal Lanka....

Read Gamperaliya,,,, Ranil-CBK generation is facing the same reality as 'KAisaru watte Mohandiram and Mathara Hamine" generation was facing at that time,,,,,

It seems Gen. Sarath Fonseka is planning to play the role of 'Piyal' :-)

lol.

Premadasa was more sinhala buddhist than Mahinda(Mahinda is just a imitator of premadasa) and he could not win the war.

One of the most exceptional military leaders we had was General Kobbakaduwa who was from Trinity college Kandy and he nearly pulled it off.

Gamini Dissanayake did a huge contribution to SL cricket. Can you explain why Arjuna Ranatunga went straight to meet widow of Gamini Dissanyake after winning the world cup?

And the best joke is SL won the world cup under Dave Watmore who should be a filthy westerner for you. Care to explain how he managed to 'give free license to play with their natural potential rather than confined in to the strokes and bowls in traditional cricket books of the West'?

Get over Racism, it feels good. I am telling from my own experiences.

There were many good posts at Lankarising which i had read with interest. It is also clear that Lanka rising is on a crusade to denigrate Royal, St. Thomas and show that Ananda Nalanda was behind every right move in SL and that nothing happens without Ananda Nalanda.

Talking about cricket Lankarising tries to show that overnight because of Ananda Nalanda SL won the world cup.

SL cricket achieved this state over many years of hard work. Till just before SL got test status it had captains from Royal and St. Thomas and players from those schools and also from Ananda Nalanda. SL application for test status was rejected many times and finally approved in 1982. It was after that SL got in to big league, gradually improved and finally won the world cup. At the time of getting test status Warnapura from Nalanda was captain who then went to South Africa tarnishing the reputation of our country. Arjuna became captain when Madugalle (from Royal) retired prematurely due to his professional commitments and since there were not enough international cricket those days. SL world cup win was not an overnight story but was earned with a lot of hard work from all, over 50 years many from Royal and St, Thomas also contributed for that. Lanka rising also tries to get the credit away from Royal St Thomas saying that world cup winning team did not have any from those school. At least the coach Watmore was a former Royalist who was instrumental in the SL world cup win.

Giving facts is one thing, hypocrisy is another.

Dear Liberal,

I could not resist but laugh at your childish arguments.....

Premadasa is a "Malwatti" buddhist. He is just another product of the urban lower class, a nother by product of colonialism...

Premadasa had no roots in Buddhism,, thats why he was easily fooled by others,,,
