The Social Venoms of Sri Lanka - From liquor to ‘Ran Depaya’

23 Oct 2009

There are two major social venoms in Sri Lankan society. The first venom, namely intoxication was strategically spread by colonial period. This resulted in considerable portion of mentally crippled and feeble male population in the society. Eventually this segment of the society became the nursery of servants of colonial masters together with handful of traitors without spinal chord and dignity. This effectively helped them to rule our country for over four hundred years.

In 1948, after exploiting people and wealth of the country, the colonial masters officially left the country. By that time, Western masters had gradually transferred key political and social positions to their obedient comprador servants. These puppet rulers continued to rule the country according to the tune of the West. These colonial masters no longer pumping wealth directly from our country, but more sophisticated mechanism was established under capitalist system.

The well established Anglican education system under Royal-Thomian culture continued to provide servants (now they are called managers) to run their multi national business in our mother land. All the sudden, the western junks ranging from Milk powder to Coca Cola, Wheat floor to canned chips became the luxury consumer items in the society. Now they wanted a mechanism to market all those western junks into Sri Lankan society so that they can continue pumping money.

However, Sri Lankan culture had its root in Buddhism which value simplicity and self satisfaction unlike the Anglo-Christian culture which promote passion and competition. Now they faced with a challenge to break this sound socio-cultural barrier to sell their junk items.

The comprador social segment and their political leadership were effective in the prospective at the initial decades of the post colonial era. The ordinary innocent people used to see the consumption patterns of comprodor segment and try to mimic those.

However, now these comprador (‘radala’) segments have lost the political leadership and their images have lost shine in the society. Still the colonial masters never accept the defeat and came up with new tactics to continue their domination in Sri Lankan market.

This time it’s no longer the power of gun, but cunning usage of media in the name of ‘Marketing’ came to rescue. Since the no longer have the power in the helm of politics, now they start attacking from the other side which is the atomic unit of the society, the family.

In the colonial era they targeted generating feeble and infertile male society that was incapable of combating the guns and ammunition. In the post colonial era, now they are vigorously investing and campaigning to generate vicious and infertile female society in our mother land.
