Delicacy of Foie Gras - A mirror of Western Inhumanity

17 Oct 2009

What is Foie Gras?
Foie gras (translated literally from French as "fatty liver" and pronounced 'fwah grah' means "Fat Liver". It's very very luxury menu that originates from France.

What’s wrong with Foie Gras?
Foie gras is produced by cruel and inhumane farming practices. It is the liver of a duck or goose who has been force fed to the point where his liver is over 10 times its normal size.

How does Foie Grass make?
At just a few months old, ducks are confined inside dark sheds and force-fed enormous amounts of food several times a day. A farm worker grabs each duck and, one by one, thrusts a metal pipe down their throats so that a mixture of corn can be forced directly into their gullets. In just a matter of weeks, the ducks become grossly overweight and their livers expand up to 10 times their normal size.

The suffering of poor animal
Birds suffer tremendously, both during and after the force-feeding process, as their physical condition rapidly deteriorates. In just a few weeks, their livers swell up to ten times their normal size, and the birds can scarcely stand, walk, or even breathe. At this point, they are slaughtered, and their livers are peddled as a "gourmet" delicacy.

They also suffer, as do all factory-farmed ducks, from debilling, which is performed ostensibly to prevent them from pecking each other when they are so severely confined. Shortly after birth, the birds' beaks are cut off, slicing through tissue rich in nerve endings. Debilled poultry suffer from chronic pain for the rest of their lives, often having trouble eating and preening.
As a result of these egregious conditions, the birds suffer both physically and psychologically.

Confinement and Cruelty

Today foie gras production is concentrated in France, which produces and consumes roughly 75% of the world's foie gras. Roughly 24 million ducks and half a million geese are killed annually for France's foie gras industry. Nearly all of the birds are raised in intensive confinement systems, and all of them endure brutal, intensive force-feeding, several times a day, in the weeks prior to their deaths. Approximately 500,000 ducks are killed annually for foie gras in the United States and in Canada, respectively.

Ban Foie Gras movement and your responsibilities:
Gavage-based foie gras production is controversial, due to the force feeding procedure and the possible health consequences of an enlarged liver that could be faced by the duck or goose. A number of countries and other jurisdictions have laws against force feeding or the sale of foie gras.

Any form of meat consumption result in slaughter of an innocent animal. So it’s up to you to decide on your reaction on consuming Foie gras and any other form of meat. Its pathetic that Europe and North Americans are still living in the barbaric mindset!!! Let’s wish that they will realize the suffering of animals and the sin they themselves commit leading to a miserable life in their current and next births.
