Rise and fall of Swarnavahini – part 1

Swarnavahini TV channel was launched on 16th of March 1997 with main theme as "Sri Lankeeya Abhimanaya" which means "Sri Lankan Pride." The station is owned by EAP Networks (Pvt.) Ltd., a fully owned subsidiary of the EAP Group. At the very inception, it was blessed with talented and creative personals mainly joined from Sri Lanka Rupavahini cooperation.
Mr. Rosmand Senarathna and Hema Nalin Karunathilaka were among them. The team was further strengthened by the leadership of Jackson Anthony and H. D. Premarathna.

In its firs decade of operation Swarnavahini produced superior programs even challenging programs of the Rupavahini. It continued producing informational as well as educational programs in addition to the entertainment programs.

The program “Maha Sinhalaye Vansa Kathava” was a unique program in Sri Lankan television history that rejuvenates the interest of history of Sri Lanka among the general public. The documentary titled “Gaga Dige” (Along the River) was a great example of producing exploration documentary program. It was followed by international level program series “Salan Hanthe” which was produced in Lessatho in Africa.

Swarnavahini set new standards when it telecast series of Buddhist damma discussion in popular program “Po dina damma desana” which was conducted by Rosmand Senarathna. The topics included Abidamma and other core concepts in Buddhism.

Swarnavahini’s programs for special occasions such as New Year, Vesak, X-mas as well as programs for Independence day’s celebrations were rich with creativity and innovative ideas.

Not only informative programs but also the entertainment orient programs of Swarnavahini had kept good standard for a decade. There was always time allocated for good tele dramas and music in great all days of Swarnavahini.

In about two years back, it all started to change and now all those great programs are just in the memories. We will discuss the current standards and the cause of changes of Swarnavahini TV channel in part–2 of this article.
