Capitalism in voting system

12 Sep 2009

In 1977, people of this country voted looking at their belly rather than the head. Junius Richard Jayawardana got a free license to amend the constitution in order to retain the power of lumpant society for another two decades. One of the strategic changes was to amend the electoral system of the country.
The introduction of proportional representation system instead of direct electorate system was a key element of the amendments.

Before 1977, a MP was directly elected for an electorate which is relatively small area compared to a district. Therefore, a person who is popular in the electorate was in good position to win in the election. There was a big affinity between the MP and the people of the area because he has to get the vote from the same people in the next election to win. Because of relative small nature of geographic area, the contestants had to spend relatively small amount of money. Therefore people who are genuinely interested in social service were actively involved in politics.

In post 1977 era, the voting system has been under the thrust of the capitalism. Current election system can easily be branded as a ‘capitalist system’. The key of capitalist society is the dominance of capital or money. It does not matter how money is earned. The current voting system has clearly preserved dominance of capital. Now a person contesting for General Election or even Provincial Election need to campaign in whole district. That has virtually sealed humble and genuine people entering into politics. In marketing term, this is like creating an artificial marketing environment so that only multi national big entrepreneurs can invest and enter while small and emerging people deprived of entering in to the competition. The people already dominant have the edge and continue their exploitation due to unfair competition.

This system is best fit into neo colonialism where local comprador society already have the dominance and capital power. So as long as current voting system is in place, post colonial comprador society will retain the power of this country.

Campaign in whole district! What a disaster! Agree. Why camping where those common people live? We should only campaign within where it only matter, with in upper class elite, like how we have been doing for past couple of thousands of years.
It is pity under the neo-colonization we are losing our old traditions. I missed those. Specially beheading, Beheading children by their mothers, just before throw that terrible woman in to lakes.

// It does not matter how money is earned// by the way I don’t think it have anything to do with capitalism. It is do with lack of law and order.
