Arthur C. Clarke and us

The post colonial mentality has made many Sri Lankans to think that Sri Lanka is too small country to live and meet their aspirations. However Arthur C Clarke was a British born and he emigrated to Sri Lanka in 1956, where he lived until his death. When he decided to settle in Sri Lanka he was already a world renowned person as a science fiction author, inventor, and futurist. His staying in this tiny Island never seem hindering his scientific research and writings.

Arthur C Clarke is most renowned for his scientific predictions. He explored into the future with rational thinking and open mind. Ironically the desire to know the Predictions of life is part of way of life of most of Sri Lankans. Unfortunately it is checking the horoscope and zodiac signs, looking for astrological auspicious time etc. that has creep into our society which are completely baseless and non-scientific. The biggest joke is that so called followers of Buddhism that is based on “Anithya” (impermanence) and “Anathma” (no-soul/no-self) concepts are also going after these myths. The scientific prediction methodology of Clarke has not yet been fully absorbed into Sri Lankan culture.

While most of Sri Lankans after getting free education leave the country without paying a penny in turn to the country, Arthur C Clarke decided to settle in Sri Lanka. He granted the money received as apart of various awards to build “Arthur C Clarke centre” which is affiliated to university of Moratuwa. While most of the politicians and so called intellectuals of this country are always looking for what they will get from this country, Arthur C Clarke loved this country and always try to give something back to the country that he live.

It is sixty years since independence and still there are people including politicians who think that public appears in wearing Sarong is bad for their state. In the contrary, Arthur C Clarke appeared wearing Sarong in quite a number of TV programmes and he discussed various topics in relax mood. While our ‘gentlemen’ are still wearing the European suite even under tropical sun heat, this great intellectual quickly adapt to our climate and culture.

When most of our people value western customs and culture as supreme, Arthur C Clarke admired our Sinhala Buddhist values and his recent predictions included that “Buddhism will be the only survived religion in the future” and “All the people will ultimately be vegetarians”. When Clarke is predicting the future which we already practiced before colonization, today the business and marketing mafia is trying to pull us to the western culture for mere profits.

Even the funeral of Arthur C Clarke was a great example of a great person. He was actively involved in writing and other scientific work even at late 80s and served the world. He never wanted to have a “funeral ceremony” for his dead body and left another lesson for Sri Lankans.

Who is behind the buzz against relocating STF?

In weekly media briefing of UNP, Mr. Lakshman Kiriella made big buzz on governments plan to relocate part of STF troop from Ampara district to Welioya and Kabithigollawa area. UNP try to convey a point that this move is due to a demand from TMVP. We all know that in the recent past, TMVP has joined hand with the government forces in the fight against LTTE terrorists. Now LTTE is swept away from entire eastern province and only a handful of isolated LTTE carders are carrying coward hide and runaway attacks. Now the real battle front is in the Wanni jungle where SL security forces are gradually marching towards the den of LTTE terrorist leader Piripaharan.

We all know that UNP under the leadership of Ranil Wickramasingha has chosen LTTE and its political wing TNA as their trusted political ally. Despite LTTE betraying Ranil in the last presidential election for some uncertain reasons (It was a political mistake by LTTE), UNP continues to support LTTE. This may be due to pressure on Weak character of Ranil Wickramasingha from his political masters in the Western world. When Thoppigala area was captured by our elite forces Ranil called it a deserted area. Once the government fully cleared terrorists from Eastern province and call for local government elections, UNP was busy criticizing the election and they joined hand with LTTE and allied NGO agents to boycott it.

Now government has engaged in the final battle against terrorism by deploying their strategic military units in the Wanni area. Relocating part of elite STF force which has good track record in the fight against terrorists is clearly a part of the final war. This is pretty obvious move and one must not be a military analyst to understand this simple fact.

On the other hand we all know that Kabithigollawa area has been under chain of claymore attacks in the recent past and therefore people in that area demanded for extra security. If the innocent people in those areas flee in fear of terrorism, it will be great hindrance to the operations in the Wanni.

At the same time, government has clearly stated that only 25% of the STF will be relocated from Ampara to Welioya region and therefore STF will continue to operate in Ampara district with additional support from Army. Ampara is a district with multi ethnicity where Tamils are minority (combination of Sinhalese and Muslims are the majority) and therefore Ampara is not a stronghold of TMVP (Batticalo district is the stronghold of TMVP). Therefore, it is obvious that this move is not going to help military activities of TMVP.

When all these factual realities are crystal clear, why does UNP accuse government of relocating part of STF from Ampara to Welioya. The answer is quite clear. It is the voice of LTTE that is advocate in the mouth of UNP spokesman. Firstly they want to hit on TMVP which has come to democracy and vowed to fight against LTTE terrorists in the Wanni. Secondly the past track record of STF has shaken the helm of LTTE. Arrival of elite STF forces in the doer step of Wanni jungle sends red light to LTTE self appointed supremo Piripaharan who is already in misery due to continues pounding by SL army in the ground and Air force attacks on his hideouts.

It is UNP that is advocating aspirations of LTTE terrorists and they were quick to make big fuzz against deploying STF in Welioya. In the last UNP rule, firstly Ranil signed so called peace accord with Piripaharan under the patronage of Norway betraying whole North and Eastern provinces to the rule of terrorists. It was then followed by accord between SLMC leader Rauf Hakeem and Piripaharan (for which Hakeem personally visited Wanni jungle). Now all the political parties other than UNP (Ranil fraction), SLMC and TNA are directly or indirectly supporting the government.

Although it is not published to the common people, we have witnessed signs of consensus in views between UNP, SLMC and TNA which is the tiger proxy party. It is in this backdrop that we should analyze the buzz of Laksman Kiriella on deploying STF of Welioya region bordering Wanni jungle. We should closely monitor why UNP spokesman coughs when Piripaharan get cold and UNP MPs shiver when Piripaharan get high temperature.

The Uniqueness of Buddhist view of Anatta (Not-self/No-soul)

Almost all main religions including Christianity, Islam and Hinduism are based on concept of self or soul. Buddhism stand unique that it is the only philosophy that not only clearly reject the concept of “self/soul” as a false view, but also consider this false view as a major cause of suffering of individuals as well as one of the root cause of problems in the society as whole. The vast majority of people still believe in ‘self’ or ‘soul’ and therefore, almost all the economic principles, political views and other social aspects molded by people who believe in this false concept carry the same falsity. Most of the current marketing, advertising and even management concepts are highly based on accepting the existence of ‘self’ or ‘soul’. We can easily understand current world problems and unrest of people by clearly understanding the false concept of ‘self/soul’ in the light of the Buddha’s unique teaching of Anatta (not-self/no-soul).

The concept of self/soul
What in general is suggested by Soul, Self, Ego, or to use Sanskrit expression Atman, is that in man there is a permanent, everlasting and absolute entity, which is the unchanging substance behind the changing phenomenal world. According to some religions, each individual has such a separate soul which is created by God, and which, finally after death, lives eternally either in heaven or hell, its destiny depending on the judgment of its creator. According to others, it goes through many lives till it is fully purified, become finally united with God or Brahman, Universal Soul or Atman, from which it originally emanated. This soul or self in man is thinker of thoughts, feeler of sensations, and receiver of rewards and punishments for all its actions good and bad. Such a concept is called the idea of Self.

Doctrine of Anatta (Not-self/No-soul)
Buddhism stands unique in the history of human thought in denying the existence of such a Soul, Self, or Atman. According to the teaching of the Buddha, the idea of the self is an imaginary, false belief which has no corresponding reality, and it produces harmful thoughts of ‘me’ and ‘mine’, selfish desire, craving, attachment, hatred, ill-will, conceit, pride, egoism, and other defilements, impurities and problems. It is source of all the troubles in the world from personal conflicts to wars between nations. In short, to this false view can be traced all the evil in the world.

The origin of false concept of self/soul
Two ideas are psychologically deep-rooted in man: self-protection and self-preservation. For self-protection, man has created God, on whom he depends for his own protection, safety and security, just as child depends on his parent. Foe self-preservation man has conceived the idea of an immortal Soul or Atman, which will live eternally. In this ignorance, weakness, fear and desire, man needs these two things to console himself. Hence he clings to them deeply and frantically.

The unique stand of Buddhism
The Buddha’s teaching does not support this ignorance, weakness, fear and desire, but aims at making man enlightened by removing and destroying them, striking their very root. According to Buddhism, our ideas of Soul and God are false and empty. Though highly developed as theories, they are all the same extremely subtle mental projections, grabbed in an intricate metaphysical and phraseology. These ideas are so deep rooted in man, and so dear and near to him, that he does not wish to hear, nor he want to understand, any teaching against them.

Acknowledged only by intellectuals
The Buddha knew this quite well. In fact he said that his teaching was ‘against the current’ (patisotagamini), against man’s selfish desires. Just four weeks after his Enlightenment, seated under banyan tree, he thought to himself: “I have realized this Truth which is against the current, which is lofty, deep, subtle and hard to comprehend.”

With this thought in his mind, the Buddha hesitated for a moment, whether it would not be in vain if tried to explain to the world the Truth he had just realized. Then he compared the world to a lotus pond: In a lotus pond, there are some lotuses still under water; there are others which have risen only up to the water level; there are still others which stand above water and untouched by it. In the same way, in this world, there are men at different levels of development. Some would understand the Truth. So the Buddha decided to teach it.

Conventional reality vs. ultimate reality
In order to avoid confusion it should be mentioned here that there are two kinds of truths: conventional truth (sammuti-sacca, Skt. samvrti-satya) and ultimate truth (paramattha-sacca, Skt. Paramartha-satya). When we use such expressions in our daily life as ‘I’, ‘You’, ‘being’, ‘individual’, etc., we do not lie because there is no self or being of such, but we speak a truth conforming to the convention of the world. But ultimate truth is that there is no ‘I’ or ‘being’ in reality.

In the Alagaddupama-sutta, of Majjima-Nikaya , addressing his disciples, the Buddha said: ‘O bhikkhus, accept the soul theory (Attavada) in the acceptance of which there would not arise grief, lamentation, suffering, distress and tribulation’. But do you see, O bhikkhus, such a soul theory in the acceptance of which there would not arise grief, lamentation, suffering, distress and tribulation?’

‘Certainly not Sir’

‘Good, O bhikkhus. I too do not see a soul theory, in the acceptance of which there would not arise grief, lamentation, suffering, distress and tribulation’

Continuing the discourse the Buddha said in the same sutta:
‘O bhikkhus, when neither self nor anything pertaining to self can truly and really be found, this speculative view: “The universe is that Atman (Soul); I shall be that after death, permanent, abiding, ever-lasting, unchanging, and I shall exist as such for eternity” – is not wholly and completely foolish?’

Here Buddha explicitly states that an Atman or Soul, or Self, is nowhere to be found in reality, and it is foolish to believe that there is such a thing.

The Buddha’s teaching on Anatta, No-Soul, or No-Self, should not be considered as a negative or annihilistic. Like Nibbana, it's Truth, Reality; and Reality can not be negative. It is the false belief in a non-existing imaginary self that is negative. The teaching of Anatta dispels the darkness of false beliefs, and produces the light of wisdom.

Even a person who has attained the early stages of realization still retain this feeling “I AM”. But later on, when he progress further, this feeling of “I AM” altogether disappears, just as chemical smell of a freshly washed cloth disappears after a time when it is kept in a box. The more you realize the reality of anatta (not-self), you will see the world in its true context. You will no longer be a slave of various political/marketing/management mechanisms, but a truly independent person.

End of an era in ancestral politics in Sri Lanka

Death of Anura Bandaranayaka marked the end of ancestral politics by privileged families in Sri Lanka. Family politics is no stranger even in contemporary international politics. The famous Kenedy family once influenced USA politics and rather infamous Bush family has influenced both American and world politics today. Now we are witnessing Clinton family politics in USA in the form of husband to wife.

However ancestral politics in Sri Lanka is different from that of western world. Western family politics is a result of monetary and political power earned by a family member oneself. However our political dynasties are direct result of colonization.

As they established colonies through military might, the colonials consolidated their positions by the help of these comprador families. They were omnipotent. Now, they were in a position to offer their loyal servants better rewards for their services – land, titles, concessions, monopolies; in other words, virtually unlimited opportunities to enrich themselves.

We bargained independence in 1948, and the political power was smoothly transferred to selected comprador families. The list of the families consists of Senanayaka, Bandaranayaka, Kotalawala, Jayawardana and few more. Their ancestors were once serviced to their foreign masters made them very, very rich, rich enough to spawn long dynasties that span few decades into the post colonial time.

In general, members of these elite families continued to serve their colonial masters and they were politically backed by the colonial countries in turn. However, once in blue moon, a member from these families breaks the tradition and goes against their masters and tries to serve the common people. However, those were extraordinary individuals and not part of tradition of these families.

Another result of colonial ancestral politics in Sri Lanka is emerging of mere characters as leaders. They were leaders by default and devoid of any real leadership qualities. As a person, some of these individuals can be identified as good gentlemen. However when it comes to national politics, the leadership qualities play important role. If the leader is inherently weak, the nation is going to be in trouble especially in demanding situations.

The political life of Anura Bandaranayaka can be identified one belong to the above category. He is generally considered to be a gentlemen politician, a good friend. But the common people of the country never accept him as a national leader. He was neither very active person nor political strategist. Most of his political decisions were wrong and most of the time he was dancing to the tune of others.

As a result, he had to spend most of his career in the opposition. Anura held the post of opposition leader in good part of his career. Regardless of his inability, the party was revolved in Bandaranayaka family. The result was the transfer of power to his own sister CBK. We all witnessed the true color of CBK, but it was too late.

Now death of Anura Bandaranayaka has officially marked the end of post colonial ancestral politics. There is not any other remaining member from Bandaranayaka, Senanayaka or Kotalawala family who can convince the people as a leader. Since we bargained and not won the independence, we had to pass this unfortunate transition period. Luckily Anura Bandaranayaka remained with opposition and therefore possible harm was reduced.

Now it is our duty to make sure that we elect only true natural leaders and not mere characters as our leader. There are few remaining ghosts of ancestral politics and structure of main political parties lack democracy to kick them away. However, we can still let them remained in the opposition until they retire politics.

Election in Eastern province and the role of Goebbels

Today we witnessed the successful completion of local government election in Batticolo district. This has been reported as an election with least amount of violence and closer to fifty percent of voters have cast their ballot to strengthen the democracy. This election sealed the defeat of LTTE terrorists in the Eastern province and created a new avenue to establish democracy.

LTTE terrorists were against this election from the beginning and their partners of politics joined the boycott later. We have the world’s biggest free media and human rights trade in the world and almost all these INGOs other than PAFERAL were hand in hand to jepodise the election. This will be the only country that free media and human rigts organizations campaigning to postpone and cancel elections. When LTTE terrorists were controlling these areas they were behaving in the opposite manner. This election not only established the democracy in Eastern province, but exposed the true nakedness of so called free media and right organizations in the country.

Goebbels was the media minister of Hitlar in Natzi Germany and Goebbels played a key role in promoting Natzism and justifying killings in Facist Germany. Goebbels used two key philosophy in his propaganda for Natzism;
1. Regardless of truthfulness, news that reaches the people first will generally be considered as truth by the general public.
2. Repeatedly publishing false news will give it an impression of truth in the eyes of general public.

The Goebbels was killed in the Second World War and Natzi Germany was defeated, still there are media Goebbels in our society. Some operate on the first philosophy of Gobels and some other on the second one.

Now we all know there was very high percentage of postal vote (greater than 50 %) and general vote (closer to 50%) at closing the poll and there were no major elction related violence or corruption. Let’s see how our media gobels reported the elction in their so called free and popular media.

Where will terror money go now?

The LTTE terrorist activities are now confined into Wanni jungle and they have hardly any access to military supply from the sea. Sri Lankan navy has destroyed all the tiger terrorist vessels that have been operated in Indian Ocean. The Sri Lanka Air Force MIG fighter jets frequently pound on sea tiger hide outs in the shore. The sea tigers that were once proud and elite unit of LTTE is now struggling even to launch a small boat in the water. Their last coward attempt to attack the navy was by shielding into Indian fishermen. This clearly shows the miserable state of LTTE sea tigers.

Obviously, due to the recent debacles, LTTE has lost its sheen and therefore there will be a decline in the funds. Still there are couple of hundreds of people in western countries who dream of Ealam. Everyday they go into sleep seeing the dream of Ealam, but when they wake up in the morning, they are still in the cool beads in Torronto or Paris. It is innocent Tamils child soldiers in the Wanni jungle who are killed in action in lieu of those who dream of Ealam in the luxury in Western countries. On the other hand, there are large number of Tamil people who are forced to pay ransom for LTTE .

It is obvious that LTTE is no longer getting ammunition from their usual supply roots. With almost all of their recent ammunition loads ended up in the bank of Indian ocean and sea tiger activities are almost at stand still due to heavy poundings, LTTE will no longer spend large share of money on heavy ammunitions. Now the multimillion worth question is where will tiger terror money go now?

LTTE will strive hard to open up alternative supply channels from the south. It is INGO agents that are willing to do anything for money and therefore, LTTE will try to buy those INGO agents and use their diplomatic channels to open up alternate supply roots for arms. The security forces and intelligent units have already uncovered attempts of supplying military jackets and high protein food items by a Norwegian INGO and a UN organization.

We all know that capitalist western politicians and diplomatic bureaucrats can be easily bought and dance to the tune of those who are willing to spend money. It may be direct transfer of money in the case of bureaucrats, but it will be indirect form of funding election campaigns and other public campaigns in the case of politicians. We have already witnessed attempt of LTTE to fund the election campaign of Hillary Clinton. However, timely lobbing and media campaigns by Sri Lankans forced Hillary to refund the money back to terrorists.

In the coming months, we may see intensified statements from people in the category of Luise Arbour. LTTE is still well capable of buying statements from western bureaucrats and specially those who are from UN organizations. There are quite a number of examples in the recent past where those office bearers from UN has go extra foot for various monetary reasons. In a recent meeting in Colombo assistant sectary for UN Anjala Cane accepted that the statement by former UN general sectary on the killing of LTTE terrorist Kaushalyan may have been accidentally signed with other documents. This clearly shows that LTTE can buy people from all levels in UN. Now LTTE will try to divert all the money for these channels rather than wasting it by trying to smuggle arms in traditional supply routes.

The last but certainly not the least is financing the media personals and organizations in the South. The name of the game of TERROISM is terrorizing the people and it include both physical and psychological terror. The goons with T-56 in the hands and cyanide capsules in the neck (blue collar terrorists) have now failed. Still the hand picked hired media personals (white collar terrorists) in the South can unleash psychological terror in the society. They will try to terrorize the politicians and common people in the South. Following every bomb blast in the south, there is a psychological media campaign to transfer the fear psychosis to the whole society. They will spread rumors on possible UN mediations, western aid cuts. They will try to co relate separation of Kosovo with Ealam etc. These politico-media crows will grab Dollars and Crones in return.

With the recent capture of Mutthusami Elankovan who is identified to be the deputy of Kumaran Padmanadan, now the government has intensified hunting the people behind the LTTE financial mechanism as well. The winning of war against terrorism is completed when not only the military wing (blue collar terrorists), but also the financial and media wings (white collar terrorists) of LTTE terrorists are completely defeated. It is important to identify allied partners and waged agents of both military and political wings of terrorists in the south.

The pro LTTE media will bark every time those white collar terrorists are captured because they will get that news first from their internal networks than the rest. However the nation is firmly behind the security forces and the government (which we have given a mandate in the last presidential election) in the effort to clean this terrorism cancer for ever in this emerald island.

Are we ready to shed the BBC media tail of post colonialism?

The popular BBC programme ‘Hard talk’ by zeinab Badawi on February 4, 2008 with Sri Lanka central bank governor Nivard Cabrall has not bee aired so far. Cabraal flew specially to London for the interview after BBC invited participation at the show at a senior level of government by somebody who’d take all questions. It is reported that Mr. Cabrall had not allowed interviewer Zeinab Badawi to shoot him down with rapid-fire questions and dominate the interview and by all events acquitted himself creditably in the context of the “hard talk”.

We all Sri Lankans were waiting for nearly one month for this programme to be telecast which is said to be related with sixty years of independence from vey same country that is funding BBC. It was also reported that Bell Pottinger, Sri Lanka’s PR consultants in Britain, had told that the tapes had been accidentally erased, an explanation widely received with more than the usual pinch of salt.

Those who have listened to the ‘Sandesaya’ programme of BBC Sinhala service, which is aired in state owned ‘National channel’ of SLBC, are well aware of the arrogance and boasting nature of BBC Sinhala sevice programme presenters. Those people who left the country and setlled in the West only few dacades back behave like they know every thing and they are the masters of media freedom. They are always trying to pound on our national pride and independence. Most of the past interviews by Sandeshaya with government security spokespersons were higly offensive. Now our people are equal to the task and therefore most of the interviews ends in debates rather than intervies. When Brigadier Prasath Samarasekara was the army spoke person, Sandeshaya’s main presenter Bandara had very hard time with him and others are continuing the standerd set against colonial minded BBC.

On last birthday of Piripaharan, the BBC Sandeshaya was planning to broadcast the LTTE terrorist leader’s annual speech. Piripaharan is a ruthless terrorist leader, and on the same day morning, the SLAF had pounded on voice of tigers transmission centre in Kilinocchi. If Piripaharan’s speech was allowed to be broadcast in state owned national service, the government would have let down our security forces fighting against the LTTE in the North. However, the top officials in the SLBC act promptly acted and removed the speach of terrorist leader and edited version of ‘Sandeshaya’ was broadcast 30 minute later than scheduled time.

There was a big buzz on the ‘Sandeshaya’ programme next day about it. The hired BBC media personals were challenging the SLBC officials for removing speach of LTTE terrorist leader. This issue was highlighted in demonstrations in foregn funded Free Media Movement (FMM) as well.

Now the same BBC that has been preaching media freedom is holding the ‘Hardtalk’ programme with central bank governor Nivard Cabrall. Mr. Cabrall represented the Sri Lankan government. He has traveled to London on request of BBC and it is Sri Lankan tax payers that are funding for that. This clearly shows the true face of western media freedom.

Since 1948, we have been sheding the remaining parts of colonial tail. In 1956, we sheaded a part of the remaining colonial tail. In 1971, we became a republic thereby cutting down the last joint of legislative and jurdicial allying with British throne. Now we have another people’s government and this is the time to throw away the colonial media link in the form of ‘Sandeshaya’. It has been serving agenda of post colonial masters in UK and their comprodor agents in Sri Lanka in the last few decades. ‘Sandeshaya’ has been a strategic part of LTTE propaganda mechanism in Sri Lanka.

BBC which was funded by British government is not a free media. We all know the influence of media in politics. The British colonial masters have been buying the air time of state owned SLBC in lieu of few traing programmes and foregn tours for SLBC officials. This is the time for the government to take a firm decision for the interest of Sri Lankan nation and cut the last post colonial media link with the colonial British Isles.
